Amanda Jackson

Psychiatric Mental health Nurse Practitioner

My name is Amanda Jackson, and I'm a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with eight years of experience in the psychiatric field. My expertise ranges from inpatient eating disorder treatment to substance abuse care. I'm passionate about treating patients holistically, looking at the person as a whole rather than just their symptoms. My specialties include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse. My goal for my patients is to heal from past trauma, practice self-love, and live a fulfilling life.

In my practice, I bring not just my professional expertise, but also the compassion and understanding I've gained from my personal experiences and travels. Just as every country I've visited has its own unique culture and landscape, I recognize that each person's mental health journey is distinct.

When I'm not in the office, you'll find me cuddling with my three fur babies, planning the next adventure with my husband, or striking a yoga pose. We love to travel the world and experience new cultures - we're at 14 countries and counting, with Switzerland being our favorite so far! We also enjoy live music, skiing, hiking, and exploring new areas. I bring this same energy of warmth, curiosity, and balance to my work with clients.

Healing Support: Amanda's Specialties

Eating Disorders

A range of complex relationships with food and body image that can impact a person's overall well-being. These experiences may involve intense emotions or behaviors around eating, and can affect people of all body sizes and shapes. Our approach focuses on nurturing a positive relationship with food, promoting body acceptance, and supporting overall health and happiness without emphasizing weight or restrictive behaviors. We recognize that all bodies are worthy of respect and care, and we work collaboratively to develop strategies that honor individual experiences and promote holistic wellness.

Depression

Major Depressive Disorder: A mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities. It significantly impacts daily functioning and can lead to various emotional and physical problems such as changes in sleep, appetite, and energy levels.

Anxiety

A condition marked by excessive, uncontrollable worry about various aspects of life. People with GAD often experience restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and physical symptoms like muscle tension.

Bipolar

A mood disorder involving alternating episodes of mania (elevated mood, increased energy) and depression. It can significantly impact a person's energy, activity levels, and ability to carry out day-to-day tasks.

Trauma

Acute Stress Disorder: A mental health condition occurring within the first month after experiencing or witnessing trauma. Symptoms mirror PTSD and include intrusive thoughts, nightmares, negative mood changes, dissociative symptoms (feeling detached from reality), active avoidance of trauma reminders, and heightened anxiety or hyperarousal. Early intervention can help prevent progression to PTSD.

PTSD: A serious mental health condition developing after trauma exposure. Characterized by persistent intrusive memories or flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbing, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative changes in thinking and mood (including guilt or blame), and heightened reactivity (including irritability, reckless behavior, and hypervigilance). Can significantly impact daily functioning and relationships.

Schizophrenia

A complex, long-term mental disorder involving a range of problems with thinking (cognition), behavior, and emotions. Symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, and impaired cognitive ability.

OCD

A disorder characterized by recurring, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that a person feels compelled to perform to alleviate anxiety or prevent dreaded events.

Substance Abuse

Substance Use Disorders: Complex conditions involving the problematic use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or prescription medications. Characterized by inability to control use, continued use despite negative consequences, tolerance development, withdrawal symptoms when stopping, and interference with work, relationships, and daily responsibilities. Often co-occurs with other mental health conditions and requires comprehensive treatment.

Amanda's Care Philosophy: From Application to Psychiatric Practice

What inspires you to want to work for Forest Path Psychiatry & Healing? What did you like (or not like!) about the job description?

I like that your company's goal is to reach everyone struggling with mental health, no matter their background or their trauma. I also LOVE that healing is part of your name.

How do you define diversity, and why do you think it's important in your practice and team dynamics?

Diversity involves people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. Having a practice that is able to reach and treat a diverse population is so important in mental health. I love learning about other people's backgrounds and beliefs and helping them find healing.

Please describe a time when you worked with someone of a different race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and/or cultural background, and how you worked together for the betterment of your patient(s).

I currently work with patients of all races and backgrounds. I have such a passion for helping people heal and I enjoy working with all different people.

What strategies do you use to ensure that all clients, regardless of their backgrounds, feel valued and respected in your clinical process?

Listening and making sure they feel heard is so important in helping these clients feel valued.

How comfortable AND/OR experienced AND/OR jazzed are you about caring for diverse populations? We are specifically focused on supporting BIPOC and LGBTQAI+ Communities.

I am very comfortable and enjoy working with all communities 🙂

I have experience with both.

Share a time when you advocated for your client even when the system around you was not supportive.

I complete peer reviews with insurance companies to advocate for why my client needs continued care.

What ages of patients are you most comfortable with working with (Tiny tots? Wise elders? All of the above?)? Choose as many as you wish!

Amanda Jackson PMHNP-BC primarily helps adults navigate life's ups and downs, bringing her expertise to bear on the challenges of grown-up life. No matter your age, if you're looking for support, Amanda's door is open – though you'll find it easiest to snag a spot if you're somewhere between your first job and your retirement party.

How many hours a week are you wishing to work? Note: We are totally flexible, and this question is just so that we can estimate how much marketing we need to do for you! 🙂 We'll talk more details if we invite you to an interview.

Anywhere from 10-15 hours per week starting off

Outside of professional life, who or what do you find inspiring? (We're so excited to read your answer here!)

I love doing yoga, practicing mindfulness, spending time with my 3 kitties, walking the beach, and traveling the world. My husband and I also love traveling to different cities to see live music.

Being in nature inspires me.

How do you feel about dark / silly humor amongst TEAMMATES?

Hysterical! You have to laugh at life; it's a good coping skill and it's tons of fun.

How do you feel about dark / silly humor with CLIENTS, when used in a trauma informed, ultimately respectful way?

Humor is an important part of my practice and the way I engage with clients.

How do you approach conflict or disagreement(s) at work?

For any conflict, I prefer to speak with someone directly and resolve it.

If applicable, what personal needs have you not received from your current/ past employment(s)? We ask because we want to develop an intentional place of work that truly supports our providers. We are humans, not cogs in wheels! Viva la Resistance!

Having a very difficult workload and accepting additional tasks with no recognition is difficult and can lead to burnout.

Extra Credit: Have you seen Adam Sandler's new cartoon movie called "LEO"? It's on Netflix! If so, please jot down your reflections on the movie here. 🙂
