Eating Disorders

A range of complex relationships with food and body image that can impact a person's overall well-being. These experiences may involve intense emotions or behaviors around eating, and can affect people of all body sizes and shapes. Our approach focuses on nurturing a positive relationship with food, promoting body acceptance, and supporting overall health and happiness without emphasizing weight or restrictive behaviors. We recognize that all bodies are worthy of respect and care, and we work collaboratively to develop strategies that honor individual experiences and promote holistic wellness.

Nicole Bell-Rogers's Care Philosophy: From Application to Psychiatric Practice

What inspires you to want to work for Forest Path Psychiatry & Healing? What did you like (or not like!) about the job description?

I love that Forest Path Psychiatry & Healing is a collaborative practice that works with clients to focus on their personal mental health and wellness. I also appreciate that the practice provides education and support while maintaining a focus on the patients' goals for their own health as a collaborative healthcare professional.

How do you define diversity, and why do you think it's important in your practice and team dynamics?

In my opinion, diversity matters in healthcare! Diversity should be reflected through having a representative healthcare workforce that all clients, especially 'clients of color,' can relate to. Client outcomes have been shown to be more positive when they have a healthcare provider who looks like them. The appearance and personal experiences of healthcare workers should be a direct reflection of the general population in order to provide clients with a sense of belonging and culturally competent care. Diversity positively affects the dynamics of a practice and team by maintaining policy implementation, promoting health and racial equity in healthcare, and strengthening the patient-provider relationship.

Please describe a time when you worked with someone of a different race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and/or cultural background, and how you worked together for the betterment of your patient(s).

During my interaction with an asexual, gender non-conforming client, I made sure to inquire about what was important to them personally. I also ensured that I supported their healthcare decisions and incorporated their personal values into their plan of care, being sure to respect their choices. During the intake portion of the visit, the client indicated how they wanted me to address them. Establishing a professional rapport and embracing a therapeutic relationship is the foundation of therapeutic healthcare and providing clients with a positive experience.

What strategies do you use to ensure that all clients, regardless of their backgrounds, feel valued and respected in your clinical process?

In my practice, I ensure that I listen to my clients and respect their beliefs, values, and cultural practices. I typically ask about these during the intake, assessment, and planning to ensure that the goals we set together are attainable and realistic for them.

How comfortable AND/OR experienced AND/OR jazzed are you about caring for diverse populations? We are specifically focused on supporting BIPOC and LGBTQAI+ Communities.

In my clinical practice, I have worked for agencies that incorporate questions pertaining to LGBTQAI+ into assessment and intake processes to ensure that care is planned and centered around what is of value and important to clients, their health, and how they identify as individuals.

Share a time when you advocated for your client even when the system around you was not supportive.

I once had an elderly client who expressed that they did not want lifesaving, heroic treatment for their cancer diagnosis. Their oncologist was adamant about enrolling them in aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The client shared with me that their provider was not supporting their decision. I spoke with the oncologist one-on-one about the client's wishes and how we, as the healthcare team, needed to support them in their decision, whether we disagreed with it or not. I then led a discussion between the client, their family, and the oncologist to ensure we were all on the same page about the client's treatment decisions in order to move forward with their care.

What ages of patients are you most comfortable with working with (Tiny tots? Wise elders? All of the above?)? Choose as many as you wish!

Young Adolescents (13-18yo), Older Adolescents to Adults (19 - 64yo)

What psychiatric population(s) have you worked with that have made you feel the most personally & professional fulfilled? Select as many as you wish!

Mood Disorders (Depression, Bipolar), Thought Disorders (Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective), Anxiety Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Gerontology Psychiatry, Adult Psychiatry, LGBTQAI+ Care, Religious Trauma, Medical Trauma

Outside of professional life, who or what do you find inspiring? (We're so excited to read your answer here!)

I love to read, fish, and participate in community engagement activities in my spare time. I also hugely value quality time with my family.

How do you feel about dark / silly humor amongst TEAMMATES?

Hysterical! You have to laugh at life; it's a good coping skill and it's tons of fun.

How do you feel about dark / silly humor with CLIENTS, when used in a trauma informed, ultimately respectful way?

Humor is an important part of my practice and the way I engage with clients.

Extra Credit: Have you seen Adam Sandler's new cartoon movie called "LEO"? It's on Netflix! If so, please jot down your reflections on the movie here. 🙂

I have not seen the movie, but I plan to watch it this week!
